The summer of 2020 in Vermont was filled with activism around black lives, policing, and ICE. These images are from a variety of events--protests about ICE's treatment of immigrants, Black Lives Matter marches in Burlington and Montpelier, and evening of Black music and poetry in Burlington. There are also some images  taken at a fraught  "Support the Police" rally in Vermont where supporters of Black Lives Matter and The Black Perspective showed up to counter this rally with their voices. It was a tense three hours, and yet there were moments of real dialogue and exchange. Images of protests in Washington, DC in the summer of 2020 are also shown here.

There is a fierceness and determination among young protesters, as well as desire to educate the public on the impact of anti-Black racism. I have tried to capture their spirit, energy, and determination in these photos. Many of the marches are led by young Black leaders with strong participation and solidarity of young white Vermonters. Old and young, abled and disabled, and people of all colors marched in 2020.
